As parents ourselves, we understand how difficult navigating the Educational, Health, Care Plans (EHCP) process can be.

Does trying Mediation effect my appeal rights at Tribunal?

Not at all. Anything discussed during the mediation process is private and confidential. If you cannot find resolution during the mediation meeting; you will be issued with a Mediation Certificate enabling you to apply to the Tribunal within 1 month.

How much is Mediation?

Mediation is paid for by the local authority and does not cost parents anything.

How long is the Mediation meeting?

Mediation meetings are usually one and a half hours to two hours depending on the local authority. The majority of mediation meeting conclude within an hour and a half, however there is scope for a further meeting if it was necessary.

Does the Mediator work for the Local Authority?

Mediators do not work for the local authority or any other party involved in the mediation process. Mediators are independent third parties; who facilitate the meeting and do not play an advisory role in the process.

Where does the Mediation meeting take place?

Since Covid, mediation meetings have taken place virtually via Microsoft Teams. We do offer face to face Mediation meetings upon request.

Who can attend the Mediation meeting?

It is useful to have all those parties that work with the child / young person or who know them well and can give information that will be beneficial during the mediation meeting.


Typical mediation meetings consist of parents, sometimes family members or close friends, the school (SENCO / Teachers) and other professionals that work with the child or young person. Parents can often request the support of SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice, Support Services) or other such support services.
